Forgive the long comment. I was pleased to see this line "We must move beyond a “feel-good doctrine of automatic forgiveness.” I've been noticing a lot in the evangelical world a shift to automatic forgiveness without repentance. It is encouraged in counseling and preached and believed in the pew - and that viewpoint has extended itself to our view of an all forgiving God. After all, if God says WE are to forgive continually without requiring repentance from the offending person, then God must forgive the same way too. I heard an interview with a young 'christian' teen who totally believed that it didn't matter what a sin someone committed they'd still go to heaven because "God forgives everybody".
