I’m Giving Away 2 Books and 2 Daughters

I am giving away two books and two daughters.  There is a possibility you could win one or both.  (Though you can’t win two books or two daughters: Maximum of one each).

How to Win the Books

If you want to win a free copy of What He Must Be . . . If He Wants to Marry My Daughter by Voddie Baucham, then do 2 things.  What He Must Be by Voddie Baucham, Jr.

(1) Subscribe to my blog by either a feed reader or e-mail (click here).  To understand feed readers, go here.

(2) Send me an e-mail saying you subscribed.  Chris (at sign) theredbrickchurch.org.  If you’ve already subscribed to my blog send me an e-mail.

I will announce the winners of the 2 copies of What He Must Be . . . on Friday, March 20.

How to Win My Daughters

First, a little plug for my girls.  Fortunately they favor their mother and are both drop dead gorgeous.  They have brown hair.  One has blue eyes.  One has brown.  That’s a preference thing and you can decide which interests you more.  They’re both smart and have a great sense of humor.

My wife is smart, loyal, beautiful, hard working, loves babies, and laughs at my jokes.  My grandpa always told me to look at a girl’s mom when considering a wife.

You will need to wait 10 and 19 years respectively to even talk with either of my daughters.  But, they are worth the wait (see Genesis 29:20, it will seem like only a few days).

Note: My daughters have some input in the decision about their marriages.  You will need to persuade them as well.  But, I assure you that I am the more difficult hurdle to clear.  See the chapter in Voddie’s book, “The Role of a Father.”

The younger of my two daughters. Talk to me in 14 years. If you want to win one of my daughters:

(1) The first thing you must do is, using only a pocket knife, stalk,  kill and field dress a grizzly bear.  Please have the hide tanned.  We will use it as a rug, and as it was part of you winning one of our daughter’s, it will mean a great deal to our family.

(2) Second, read the new book by Voddie Baucham, What He Must Be . . . if He Wants to Marry My Daughter.  In this excellent book, Voddie lays out a vision for what we dream the men who marry our daughters should be like.  He writes:

“My desire in this book is to kill two birds with one stone.  First, I want to lay out a clear, balanced, realistic, biblical picture of what moms and dads should be looking for on behalf of their daughters and seeking to produce in their sons.  Unfortunately, most parents give little or no thought to what it takes to raise godly men.”

If you read Voddie’s book, then you will have a clear expectation of what I am looking for in applicants for my future son-in-laws.

  • Truly a Christian
  • Prepared to lead like Christ
  • A love for children
  • A protector and provider
  • And, much more. . .

Fathers: Let me be very serious about this.  I plan to inventory this book.  I will ask my daughters to read it.  I will share the content and book with my sons.  I pray my boys will be godly leaders in their homes.  I believe any parent who has unmarried children will want to have this book on hand as they prepare their children for marriage.

Where my daughters are concerned, future son-in-laws will be required to read Voddie’s book, after they kill the bear.

Shannon Popkin’s New Blog: Tiny Paragraphs

Here is a new blog to add to your feed reader (and if you don’t know what I mean by a feed reader, then go here).

Try Shannon Popkin’s blog: “Tiny Paragraphs.”  I predict this one will soon gain a following.  Shannon will combine theological depth with examples that only a mother of small children can produce.  (Click here).

Shannon has written for Focus on the Family and is a speaker.  More important, she was a counselor at Camp Calvary.

Outbreak! News from Zambia

One of the missions projects our church has supported is the missions work that Cornerstone church of Ames is doing in Zambia.  When I came home from church today, I saw this update on their blog.  For many reasons, we need to read it.  Take the time to read other posts on the blog, too.

For our church, I am so thankful that we have a growing heart to hear about how the hope of the gospel can go out to dark places in the world.

There is a small village not far from here. I guess “far” is relative. It is about 90 kilometers from here. All on bad bush roads. One English lady here told me it is about as far into the bush as you can get in Zambia. The place is called Chisomo, also locally known as “the valley”. I visited there a couple of years ago with a team from Cornerstone. We traveled there in the back of a truck for about 6 hours. While we were there we showed the Jesus film and started a church. Pastor Navice has been working with the leaders there to grow the church.

Why am I telling you this? Well, as I was working today with one of the guys Willard. We saw some helicopters flying over. I thought that was kinda odd so I asked him what they were doing. He said that there is an out break in a village called Chisomo. He said it was cholera, and “people were dieing like animals”. (he was surprised that I had been there, as he had lived here for his whole life and never been there) I later found out that they don’t know what the problem is, all they know is that lots of people are dieing. The government is bringing in food, medicine and doctors to help out. I don’t know a lot about this stuff but I do know that things have to be pretty serious to have this kind of relief come in. I know that there are many who are very sick.

Chisomo is a desolate place, frequent floods, poor farm ground, located at the end of a long, bad, road to nowhere there is little traffic from outside, little food, little medicine, and little hope. It is one of the most hopeless places I have ever seen. I was just talking with a government official about the village on tuesday, before all of this came up. I asked why they don’t leave, with all the suffering and stuff? He said that the government had offered to relocate them but they refuse. They like looking at the mountain views, their ancestors are buried there, they can’t leave. They will suffer and die there because that is where their forefathers brought them. My worker Willard put it well saying that “they are ignorant.” The picture above is a picture I took there of their school when I was there August 2007.

(Note from Jeff — When Zack and I visited there with some others in 2007, some kids were in this school and when they looked out the windows and saw us coming with our white skin, they jumped out of the back windows of the school in fear. They’d never seen white people before!)
