47 years ago today Lewis, Kennedy, and Huxley all died

Justin Taylor points out:

C. S. Lewis—one week shy of his 65th birthday—collapsed and died at 5:30 PM (GMT) at his residence at The Kilns, outside Oxford, England.

Two hours later, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, TX, pronounced dead at 1:21 PM (CST). He was only 46 years old.

Exactly six hours later, Aldous Huxley, the English writer and author of Brave New World, died at 5:21 PM (PST) in Los Angeles. He was 69.

The philosophical theologian Peter Kreeft wrote a book that imagines a dialogue between these three men in which they each represent their distinct worldviews shortly after their deaths.  It’s been years since I read it – - and Kreeft is very intellectual – - but, I remember that it was highly interesting.

Truth without love . . .

Per Trevin Wax:

Truth without love is dogmatism.
Love without truth is sentimentality.
Speaking the truth in love is Christianity.

Pastoral thoughts illustrated with Stillman Valley Football pictures

For most, Thursday is Thanksgiving.

Here in the Valley, it’s Thanksgiving and State Finals Eve.  On Friday we play our worthy opponent, Illini West, led by speed merchant Ser “the blur” Whitaker (see the Quincy Whig and the Burlington Hawkeye).

In anticipation of State Finals Eve, I am posting 6 illustrated football thoughts.  You don’t have to read the “preaching.”  But, at least glance at the stuff in bold and enjoy the pictures.

1.  The more joy is shared, the bigger it gets.  If you play only for yourself, then your joy will be a very small thing.  But, if you play for your entire community, then you will know massive joy.

What I like about this picture of Dane Green scoring our first touchdown against Immaculate Conception is that you can see our crowd beginning to celebrate in the background.

And, a lot more people are involved in SV football than just the players.

Watching Isaac Robert kick has been a lot of fun!

2.  Life is a smash mouth game.  Everybody gets knocked downThe question is, “Are you going to get back up?”

Part of the heart of the reason we are proud of our SV team is not because we score every time we run a full back dive. Our style is more three yards and a cloud of dust.

The field in Elmhurst was anything but “immaculate.”

But, even if some linebacker punches us (figuratively speaking) in the mouth we get back up and run it again.

It’s the same deal in life. Righteous men are different not because they never fall. But, because they get back up. For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity.(Pr 24:16).

Of course, sometimes we need help getting back up. That’s why we have coaches and trainers, pastors and a community – - to help if we need it.

Adam Cox played through pain to score this fourth quarter touchdown against Tolono Unity.

Cox's touchdown put Stillman up by two scores.

3.  The people in the trenches don’t get enough credit.

Our style of football requires winning the war in the trenches.  Our linemen have done an incredible job.  Kody Harriott, Russell Stone, Clay Kruger, Logan Lersch, Gregg Ballard have dominated.

Such is life.  For every out front person, there are four working in the trenches.  And, that’s where the game is won, as seen in this big SV line push against I.C.

Stillman's linemen lean forward.

Notice that our linemen made an “Aurora Christian sandwich” here so Adam Cox could get loose.

Stillman's backs had many big holes against Aurora Christian.

4.  Work hard.  “Fly around” and good things will happen.  In the below pictures, I don’t think A.J. Dobson or Jordan Tanaglia actually tipped any of the balls.  That’s okay.  Keep flying around and eventually good things will happen.

Jordan Tanaglia scooped up this ball for the score after a blocked punt.

Jordan got this against Hampshire

5.  Be ready.  You never know when you will get in the game.  Abraham Lincoln famously said, “I will prepare and someday my chance will come.”  Proverbs 15:19 says that for lazy people, the path is blocked.  But, work hard and some day your chance may come.

We’ve seen that time and time again in SV.  Earlier this year, Jeff Cialkowski did a great job starting at quarterback against Oregon.

6.  Nate Bond is not the only one who is quick; Life goes by pretty fast too.  As the book of James says (James 4:13-17), life is a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes.  This football season is over in the blink of an eye – - and so goes life – -like Nate.

Bond up the sideline as SV coaches Lalor and Rempfer look on.

We’ll see what happens on Friday.  With Stillman having won four state championships previously, this year is  “the drive for five.”  We have rings for our fingers, now we need one for the thumb.

A Christmas present idea for your pastor

I’m not dropping hints to the Bricks.  Jamie and I were already able to go to Cedarly.  But, if you are looking for a Christmas present that will both bless your pastor and church (see Motivation for Caring for Your Pastor), then consider giving the Christmas present of a retreat at Cedarly.  It is a bargain.

Cedarly is a retreat center that focuses on spiritual renewal for pastors and their spouses.  Pastors (and spouses if they are married) arrive on Sunday and stay until Friday morning.  Each participant maps out how he or she will pursue spiritual renewal during the week.

Jamie and I have been to Cedarly three times.  And, each time we have been renewed.  The facilities are beautiful.  The food is excellent.  And, the focus is truly on spiritual renewal.

You learn a lot more from the below video.  This would make a wonderful Christmas present for your pastor.

It wasn’t too late for this giraffe, how about you?

“Be self controlled and alert, your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8.”

If ever there was an illustration for 1 Peter 5:8, it comes from this National Geographic picture.

Instead of asking casinos for financial advice, look to the ladies of the Red Brick Church

Would you click through to my guest column in the Register Star and comment about whether or not you think bringing a casino to Rockford will help our financial situation?

***********

The Rockford Register Star is one of the most influential papers in Illinois.  The Register Star editorial board recently argued that Rockford should pursue a downtown casino (see here).

I responded with a guest editorial in which I contend that the route to true financial recovery is not taxing the gambling industry.  Instead, we should cultivate sound financial values in our citizenry.

Government leaders who face the brutal task of making decisions about budget cuts are looking for answers. In this column, my proposal is that they receive counsel from a group of ladies right here in northern Illinois.
Many Sundays at the Red Brick Church in Stillman Valley, I have noticed how classy the ladies from my parents’ generation look.

I’m more than a little biased, and our men may be a different story, but where the ladies are concerned, there isn’t a better looking group around. Often, as I shake hands at the front door as people leave, my wife and I comment about how nice we think the ladies look.

When my wife and I do directly compliment one of these ladies, perhaps on a particular dress or jacket, there is a typical response we often receive. The lady who received the kind word will say quietly, “Pastor, I got this on sale for 40 percent off.” Or, “Pastor, would you believe that this dress is over 10 years old?”

The reason, of course, that the ladies from my parents’ generation respond to a compliment about an outfit in this way is because being frugal is deeply ingrained in their value system. Granted, they like the minister noticing that they look nice. But it wouldn’t do for him to think they are throwing money around like sailors on shore leave.
So, there you have my recommendation. . . .

Read the rest here and consider commenting on the Register Star web site.  What’s important on the Register Star web site is not so much that you agree our ladies look nice (they do).  Rather, give input on the decision about whether or not casinos are the right solution.
