Bricks: Father’s Day Summer Assignment

Would you share something about your father for which you are thankful? This is for our church family in a special way.

  1. Read Ephesians 5:22-6:4 Aloud
  2. Prayerfully Thank God for your home – Maybe each person in the family thank God for one aspect of your home.
  3. Couples share with your children the story of how you met. Even if you know the story very well, they need to hear it again. Can you think of some new part of the story?
  4. Tell us something you are thankful for about your father – – In order to complete this question, you have to respond on my blog! You don’t have to put your full name. First names or initials are fine.  But on Father’s Day Ben will take care of Father’s who children did a good job being thankful!

  1. I am thankful for how my father was and is consistent in his Christian example.

  2. My girls are at VBS right now, but we talked about the homework yesterday in the car and these are their answers.

I am thankful for my dad because he reads stories to us before bedtime every night, and he uses funny voices, too.–Lucy D.

I am thankful for Daddy because he lets us eat junk food when Mom’s not around.–Elaine D.

I am thankful for my husband for the godly, loving dad he is to two girls–even though being in a houseful of females is puzzling to him at times. I am also thankful for my own dad because I know where he is every single morning of his life at 6:30 a.m.: sitting in his rocking chair, doing his devotions.–Alice D.

  3. I am thankful that my dad showed me the importance of having a strong work ethic. He was always a hard working man that did whatever was necessary to provide for his family. I strive to do the same.

  4. I am thankful for my dad who never let his “manliness” keep him from saying “I love you,” enjoying dance recitals, helping me pick out an outfit, or participating in Christmas caroling. I also love that as he has watched me grow up, I’ve watched him grow up too…I’m proud of who he has become since I’ve known him.

  5. I am thankful for my Dad who taught me to pray and loved without limits. I am very thankful also for my husband who is so hardworking and faithful in providing for, serving and loving our family. And then I am also thankful for my son in law who shares his love of music with our grandchildren and teaches them to pray just like my Dad did for me.

  6. I am very thankful for my Dad’ s heart. He loved the Lord so much! He committed his life to the Lord and the Lord’ s work! I am thankful he loved my Mom. I am also thankful that he was a man of integrity.

  7. Jamie-I agree wholeheartedly. I couldn’t have asked for a better father in law. Would you share something specific that your dad did that taught you as a daughter that your dad loved your mom . . . How on a day to day basis did he teach that?

  8. Clayton,

Would you be willing to write out in a paragraph–just a very brief way–the story you told me about your dad helping someone at work that made such an impression on you?

  9. Jaime-I pray that my kids would be able to say that they have seen me make progress. That is so wonderful.

  10. I am thankful for my dad for how he always helps me with any problem i have. I love how he is super supportive of me and understands how i think. I like that he appreciates my love for history.

I am thankful for my mom because she makes wonderful food. Also i love how she can make a whole room light up when she walks in. I appreciate how much work she has to do for our house to run somewhat smooth. Also it is a wonder that she can keep me on schedule.

  11. One thing that wild happen in the Limbaugh home was..

My Dad and I would go shopping for the Christmas tree. After we picked one out he would always say to me. Now let’s go pick out a poinsettia for your mother. That was his way of contributing to our trip. It was not a cheap small one either. He would find a huge one that was pretty expensive.

But on a daily basis. When he got up in the morning he would sit out in his recliner until my mom would either get up or come out of the bedroom. They would then share breakfast together. Sitting down together. Then lunch time he would come and get her to go to lunch. They would sit down almost every meal together practically everyday.

My mom and dad were both very very involved at church. We never missed a service. And I have a vivid memory of being sick and laying on the basement floor because mom and dad were serving. Therefore we were at church sick or not.

  12. I am thankful for my dad for how he always helps me with any problem i have. I love how he is super supportive of me and understands how i think. I like that he appreciates my love for history. I love how he is watching out for me and gives me advice. I appreciate how he takes pictures of my football games. I really enjoy having a dad that will work for hours on end outside of his job just so we could have an amazing vacation and go to Switzerland.

  13. If I need something, I don’t hesitate even one second before calling my dad. It’s been that way my whole life.

In college, it could be 2 a.m., with me in VA and my dad in MI; and if my computer wasn’t printing out the paper I needed to turn in in the morning, my dad was the one I would call.

I remember one time, our youth group bus broke down at an amusement park a couple of hours away. My dad drove to pick my friends and me up, then drove back with my contact lenses cupped in his hand because I wanted to go to sleep and had no where to put them.

And once, I had driven about an hour after leaving my parents’ house, when I saw someone waving in the car beside me on the highway. It was my dad. I had forgotten all of my maternity clothes and he had been chasing me down for about 70 miles to get them to me.

A few months ago, when our kitchen caught on fire, I called and said, “Can you come right over?” He was there in a few minutes, climbing a over a seven foot wall in our attic to get to the attic fan so he could open it and suck the smoke out.

Often, before we end a phone conversation, my dad will say, “Call if you need me.” I am so thankful that I’ve never had to think twice before doing just that. My dad has shown me what our heavenly Father is like–a God who is there whenever we call on him, ready and willing to help.

  14. I AM THANKFUL THAT MY DAD WILL TALK TO ME AND HELP ME OUT WITH EVERY ASPECT OF MY LIFE.

  15. I am so thankful for my dad because he works so hard to help his family. He has spent countless hours helping us with homework,or questions,or anything else we need. My dad is always there for me.

    Proverbs 17:24
A discerning man keeps wisdom in view,
but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth. My dad is a discerning man

  16. I am Thankful for my Dad’s tender spirit. Every Christmas he would read the Christmas story with such great emotion that tears flowed and he had trouble finishing. He always showed love with tender strength. It was not uncommon for him to cry while telling us he loved us. My Dad is in Heaven and I call my Mom every Father’s Day & thank her for being a great wife so that he could be a great Dad to all 7 Children. I miss my Dad but am thankful for all the GREAT memories and lessons!!

  17. I am thankful that my dad uses his talents as a writer to challenge and encourage others on his blog and in his books.

  18. Carter (8): I am thankful for all of the work that Daddy puts into giving us good things like our pool and stuff like that. He teaches me how to build things and he teaches us about God. He works hard to earn money to take us to fun places like Disney World.

Eden(5):Daddy is really nice and kind. Daddy gets lots of things for us and whenever he is able to he reads out of my Bible. Daddy works really hard. He is a really good husband to Mommy.

Macklin(4): Daddy is really funny. Daddy loves me and he never does anything mean to me. I go to Daddy at night when I am scared and he gives me drinks when I am thirsty.

  19. I asked the boys what they love about their daddy and this is what they said.

Jaden- I really like to garden with my daddy and fish with him too. I like to go to the zoo with him too and when we wrestle.

Jaxen-I like his peace, love and kindness. (we have been talking about the fruits of the spirit) too cute right?! I like when he teaches me how to play baseball.

I love that my husband loves to play with the boys and enjoys doing what they want to do. He’s a great dad.

    I love my dad’s laugh.

  20. Driving to work the other day, I was thinking about how neat it would be to actually audibly hear God say he loves me. Not as a sign such as calling fire down from heaven or parting of the Red Sea. I believe God’s word and that is enough. I read that God loves me in his word and hear it from the pulpit but it didn’t diminish the longing of what it would be like to hear it audibly, just like I hear it from my wife, kids and grand kids. Later that day, I was talking to my father who is in very poor health. At the end of the conversation he told me he loved me and then he said something I had never heard him say. He said “God loves you son”. That was a blessing to me that my Heavenly Father chose to use my broken earthly father to audibly tell me he loves me.

  21. My Dad would have been 95 years old this Sunday, June 17, but he passed away 45 years ago when I was 17. My brothers/sisters and I always remember that he was a strong but quiet leader in our family. He made time to spend with each of us individually. We would often take little day trips where he would tell stories or pass on words of encouragement. He loved sports and taught us how to play the right way – be gracious whether we won or lost (some of us are still working on that). I have one regret – that he did not know any of his grandchildren.

  22. Pete, what amazes me about your comment is that your dad had 9 children! And he lost his wife as a young father. Praise the Lord for fathers like that.

  23. RD-Wonderful that even as a grandfather, what your dad says to you is still meaningful. Thanks for sharing that.

  24. Stacy, thanks for having your little boys share. One of the best parts of being a pastor is shepherding Jaden and Jaxen. Be sure they come by my study before church.

  25. I am thankful for my dad because, my dad works long hours of Truck Driving so I can have the things that I need. I am also thankful for my dad because most nights my dad helps me with my Homework. He also encourages Me to get good grades.

  26. I am thankful for my dad because he is always there for me. He knows how to cheer me up if i am sad or mad. Not a day goes by that my dad doesn’t make someone laugh whether its at the dinner table or its at church my dad is always making someone laugh.

  27. I am thankful for my dad because he always plays with me, helps me with homework, lays with me at bedtime and we like the same football and basketball team. He is always funny :]:]:]

  28. I am thankful for my dad because he is always there for me. He makes me laugh and cheers me up whenever i am sad or mad. There isn’t a day that goes by that my dad doesn’t make someone laugh. Wether its at the dinner table or its at church my dad is always makin people laugh.

  29. I love my Dad because he shares my love for horses and he teaches me how to ride and take care of them. My Dad also teaches me how to use a camera. My Dad’s not the best speller, but I teach him how to spell so that’s OK. He makes the BEST golden marshmallows over the campfire. When something goes wrong with my computer, he fixes it. He’s awesome at fixing things, and lots of things break around here (because of my brother!). He goes to work to earn money so we can have food and a nice house. Thanks, Dad! I love you!

  30. My Dad has always been special to me. I was (and am) Daddy’s Little Girl (even though I have 3 siblings). When I was little, I walked with my feet turned in and I had braces on my legs to correct the issue. Every day, my Dad would drive into the driveway and I would run out to him and fall flat on my face. This broke my Dad’s heart. One day, it happened like usual and he was so upset that took those braces off my legs and taught me how to walk correctly himself.

My Dad has always been the strongest and one of the most reliable persons (other than my Mom) that I know. He’s always had the answers to any question I’d ask. I finally learned through tough times and poor decision making on my part in my early 20s that he was truly reliable and loved me regardless of what I did. He instilled a hard work ethic in me and always, always pushed me hard to always do my best – academically, athletically, and personally.

The hardest part now is watching Dad lose so much of his physical and cognitive functions because of Parkinson’s. However, in some ways, I look at Parkinson’s as a gift. Crazy? Yes, but no. Having Parkinson’s has made my Dad start to pray and believe and trust in God and His plan for his life. So, if Parkinson’s is what bring my Dad to the Lord, then I’m thankful for it.

  31. I have always been a daddy’s girl, ever since I was little. My dad and I share so many things in common and I love the closeness we share. I am thankful for he (and mom) teaching me about Jesus, ever since I was young. I am thankful dad had shared his love for reading with me.
Also, my dad is a teacher, he likes to use every moment as a teaching opportunity- and since I am homeschooled, this comes in handy!
I am thankful and proud of how hard he works too, his sacrificial acts of working overtime or on weekends, in order that we can have a nice vacation or something speak volumes of his character!
My dad is always the one who can make me laugh, supports me when I need it the most, and protects me from things that I cannot see or understand.
    I love you daddy!

  32. One more thing that is so important in my relationship with my father- is our FOOTBALL BOND! He is my favorite person ever to watch football with! I love it 🙂 Not many girls are lucky enough to spend Sunday afternoon curled up to their dad, watching team after team play…it’s some of my favorite times ever!

  33. I am thankful that my dad coaches baseball for me and helps me everyday.I love it when he takes me to baseball games, football games, and basketball games.I am thankful he comes to all of my baseball, basketball, and soccer games.i am also thankful that my dad is a christian and he takes me to church every sunday.

  34. Daniel – – -and your dad has good neighbors and he keeps his cool when the umpire tells you to FREEZE.

  35. (As typed by his mom here:)

Aiden says he is thankful for his daddy because he takes him on bike rides, watches Star Wars with him and wrestles with him too. He says he has a great dad!

  36. My Dad worked 3 jobs while I was growing up to provide for our family and so my Mom could stay-at-home to take care of us. When we moved to SV her ultimatum was that Dad would not work on Sundays anymore. He did as she asked. He was in the back scenes in church work and they loved their Our Savior Cares group. His greatest fear was that Mom would pass on before him, he loved her so much, but God in his grace took him first. They were soul mates and I learned many lessons through their marriage, the greatest being unconditional love. He was always there for us. It gives me great comfort that they’re together with Christ and I look forward to the day that I see them again.

  37. DD– that is so wonderful. And what I think is great is that your father’s hard work is still remembered! As is his love for your mother and for your church.

  38. I’m thnakful for my dad because he works to keep a roof over our head, and helps me with my school work.I Love my Daddy!!!!!!!!!

  39. I am thankful for my Dad for all his hugging, playing tickle monster and jumping on the trampoline with me.

  40. I am thankful for my Dad because he makes great Banana Bread and he took us to Lung Fung Chinese Restaurant last week.

  41. I am thankful for my Dad because he took time to talk to me and to listen to me. I am sure I learned more about history listening to my Dad telling me stories in the old truck then I ever learned at school. He took time to just be with me.

My parents divorced when I was 5. He did not work to far from where I lived with my Mom. One day when I was 6 or 7,he picked up KFC and rode his bike to my house. We rode our bikes to the park and had a picnic.

When I was a teenage he listened to endless rants about boys, friends and whatever. He gave me great advice without being preachy.

I am thankful for my husband for being my best friend. He has been one of my closest friends since I was 16. At 18 We started to date and when I was 21 I married my best friend. He stands at my side and supports me in so many things. He loves me and loves our kids and best of all he loves the Lord. He is a great husband, father and friend.

  42. I am thankful for my dad’s love and for the little ways he made me feel special. My best memories of dad are from when I was really little, probably four to five years old. I remember him helping me get ready for church and his large fingers clumsily trying to figure out how to slip my tights over my toes. I can remember crawling up on my dad’s lap when he was sitting in our living room rocking chair. He and I looked at a Christmas catalogue together and as I was showing him the presents I wanted he said, “Honey, do you know you can be anything God wants you to be?” I remember him giving me a little patch behind our garage where we planted a rhubarb. He told me it was my rhubarb and I had to take care of it. I remember running out to our grain bins when I knew he was working so that I could say hi to him because I knew he would always act happy to see me. And best of all, I remember sitting behind him on the couch while he was watching television or reading the paper so that I could slip my barettes and ribbons into his hair.

I am also extremely thankful for the memories of my Grandpa Clyde. I loved the way he would always try to think of some way to make my day more special, whether it was bringing me a bag of Brach’s candy, or surprising us with everything from a kitten in a grocery bag to an orphan calf. I always knew he enjoyed being with me, teasing me, and making sure I was well cared for, provided for, and protected. I am thankful for the way he wasn’t concerned with appearances. I loved the way his worksuits smelled of grease from his hard work, I thought it was a great smell. Now it makes me remember how he valued work. I loved listening to his strong voice talking to my mom from our kitchen table. I didn’t know what he was saying, but I knew it was important and that he deserved respect.

I am also blessed to have a wonderful stepfather. I am thankful for the way that he loved me even though I wasn’t his own. He chose to love me at times that I was very unlovable. I am thankful for all of the little notes and cards of encouragement through the years. I am thankful for his passion for life and for helping others. He has always been a wonderful example of generosity, service, and compassion to those who are typically disregarded by others.

All three men God has given to me as examples of a father have had at least one thing in common besides their belief in the LORD, they all have loved and delighted in children, valued them and given them time and attention. I think of them when I read about the way Jesus loved children and invited them to come to him. They all gave me an idea of the way God loves me as my Father.

  43. I am so thankful for my dad because he is awesome.I love him so much. He wrestles with me and he catches butterflies too. He helps me clean my toy room and plays dolls with me. He is really good to me all the time.

  44. I am thankful for my Dad because I could not survive without him because he is the best Dad in the entire world!

  45. I am thankful for my Dad because he takes me for rides on his snowmobile at Christmas.

  46. I am thankful for my dad because he is awesome and nice. He takes me nice places and gets me cool stuff for my birthday. He works really hard f

  47. I am thankful for my dad because he is awesome and nice. He takes me nice places and gets me cool stuff for my birthday. He works really hard to be able to do these things. I think he is the best dad in the world.

  48. I am thankful for my dad because he is willing to listen to us whenever we need to talk. I know he will always be there for me. Also, he is a great leader of our family! I love you daddy!!!

  49. I am thankful that my dad was always there for me That he made sure I had a college education. That he spends time with his grandchildren.

  50. I am thankful that my dad is always joyful and kind. No matter how hard his day is he always comes home with a smile and asks me about my day. I’ve never seen him grouchy (unless I steal his spot on the couch. Lol) My dad is my role model. He taught me to always be kind and never be grouchy because that does not help anyone. Love you dad! <3

  51. I am so thankful for my dad playing with me. Like star wars and water baloon fights. He is always fun.

  52. The reason why I am thankful for my dad is because that he is so caring, loving, grateful and kind. he works all day so we can pay our bills and just to buy food. he calls me little nick names, and calls me princess. and when I talk he listens to me. and I think he is an awesome dad, a cool dad, a wonderful dad, and a thankful dad. he is the BEST dad I could ask for. my dad makes me laugh A LOT! he teaches me to build a treefort with him, he teaches me to take care of little children, he teaches me to have fun, and he teaches me to care. my dad is the BEST dad I could ask for, I couldn’t ask for another dad. when I ask him to do something for me, he does it, when I can’t reach something he gets it for me. since I am homeschooled, I can see him a lot, especially in the summer. i love my dad sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much and he is the BEST dad I could ask for. I love you dad! 🙂
