Produce in Mary Beth’s Garden

There are some moments as a father of little girls that I wish I could bottle. Tonight was one of them.

We at a Brick in the Valley are pleased to announce that Mary Beth harvested her first round of produce this evening. She was thrilled to pick two cherry tomatoes.

Our followers at a Brick in the Valley will recall that Marybeth purchased her tomato plants on May 22. May 25 was planting day.  So just under two months later, we are already enjoying the fruit of our labor.

Mary Beth, for her part, was so excited. She was out watering her garden when she spied a ripe tomato. It was hidden away and she was not aware that one was even close to being ripe. She ran into the house to share the good news and we grabbed a camera.Image of Mary Beth buying tomato plants.

Mary Beth has already eaten one of her tomatoes and she believes that it tastes far, far better than anything available in the store. Even as I write she is on the phone sharing the news of her harvest with her grandfather who is a retired farmer.

  1. Congrats Marybeth!!! The fruits of your labor ALways taste better than from other sources! I ate the first of my cucumbers 3 days ago and it was SO delicious. 🙂 I also wanted to know if you’ve had to deal with hornworms on your tomatoes? I had four on one plant and tried to get my grandson Aiden to help pick ’em off but he said “yuck no”. I have to say it’s not my favorite caterpillar to dispose of……my discriminating koi won’t even eat them! Smart fish. 🙂 Btw, Aiden also says the “little tomatoes” are the only kind he likes. 🙂 Keep up the good garden work and enjoy those tomatoes!

  2. I’m SO EXCITED!!! YES!!!
Guess what? (Time for confession…) I ate two cherry tomatoes this morning for breakfast while watering. Yes. My first two! And they ARE MUCH YUMMIER than anything ever purchased in a store.

I’m so glad you took pictures!
(There are a lot of exclamation points in this little reply, but my goodness…tomatoes DESERVE a lot of exclamation points, don’t they? As well as good gardeners.)

    Huzzah!!!

  3. I have only had trouble with beetles. Today I got 3 more tomatoes I let my dad have 1. I will have to show you a picture of a golf ball sized pumpkin sometime(: Last night when I ate a tomato (my first homegrown taste test) I was amazed!

Montana Mary do not confess that!! You are the one who took care of the tomatoes unless there is something I do not know. Well I have to go t.t.y.l. !!!

    Marybeth

  4. Do put up a picture of the baby pumpkin! I’m always entranced by the perfect, teeny-tiny vegetables. Cucumbers, beans, squash…they all start out as minuscule versions of what their grown up, mature selves will be. That makes me smile.
