Bad Mr. Huckabee, Bad

John Mark Reynolds interacts with the criticism that Mike Huckabee has recently fielded for speaking out against the Islam religion.  For the record, I don’t necessarily Reynold’s critique of Huckabee, but I do appreciate the gist of the post.

Mike Huckabee thinks Islam is wrong and evidently the chattering classes think this is a serious issue.

The Christians of Constantinople cannot use one of the ancient churches of Christendom, because Islamic rulers will not allow it, but Mike Huckabee said something harsh about Islam so he must be rebuked.

The spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians, the Ecumenical Patriarch, cannot open a seminary, because the Muslim rulers of his nation will not condone it, but a Fox news commentator said something that offends Muslims so we must attend.

There is no land where Muslims are the majority and Christians are not second-class citizens, but a former Baptist minister publically disagrees with Islam and we must ponder the pain Huckabee may have caused Muslims.

I have friends doing humanitarian work in nations where Islamic tribes enslave Christians, but a former governor of Arkansas was politically incorrect, so Americans must discuss Christian tolerance of Islam.

How to Pray for Egypt Today: An Insiders Report

From the Gospel Coalition:

Editor’s Note: Ramez Atallah serves as general secretary of the Bible Society of Egypt. Asking for ongoing prayers, he sent this report today when internet access was restored to the nation in turmoil.

1. Christians and Muslims have been united as never before defending their homes on overnight shifts (due to the lack of police security). This is resulting for many to make friends with neighbors they never knew, and there is a real sense of camaraderie, which we never had before.

2. Most of the demonstrations in Cairo are restricted to Tahrir Square, which is very close to Kasr El Doubara Evangelical Church, so they especially need your prayers for protection.

3. No one we know has been injured or attacked.

4. Food, medical, and other supplies are dwindling

Cal Thomas: Egypt Aflame

Cal Thomas:

The turmoil in Egypt must not be seen in isolation from other events in the world. Neither is it an aberration. It is the next scene in a long-running play whose final act is the domination of the world by radical Islamists.

The Obama administration has been delusional in its belief that dictators and religious fanatics can be coddled. It has also been dangerously wrong in thinking exposure to our way of life will make them more like us. In fact, such exposure has confirmed what they have been taught: that America and the West are secularists who mock God, sexualize women and live only for the pleasures of this world.

The history of radical Islamist movements is being repeated in our time. First there is infiltration and when their numbers are large enough, domination. Next comes subjugation, followed by eradication of nonbelievers. To think things will be different this time is folly.

Every church must make a decision

J. D. Greear, Lead pastor of the Summit Church and author of Breaking the Islam Code, says:

Every church has got to make a decision whether or not it’s going to be a seed that exists for itself or whether it’s going to be a seed planted in the ground that dies [to be a blessing for the nations].

Asking for prayer for my friend Dr. Russ Ebersole, Jr

DSC_0335

I received word this morning that Dr. Russ Ebersole is being flown out of Africa today because of significant health problems.  He has been very ill for a couple of weeks and it is now necessary to bring him to the U.S. as soon as possible.

Dr. Ebersole is a pediatrician in Togo, West Africa.  I cannot begin to describe the difference that he makes in saving lives and sharing the Gospel.

In the above picture Dr. Ebersole interacts with a Togolese child whose arm could no longer have movement due to scarring from a burn.  Shortly after this picture, the little boy went into plastic surgery to have this corrected.

Wonders of Africa

Allen Yeh talks about an amazing day in Africa when he saw wonders and wondered.

Thus ended The Most Amazing Day Ever—lions, zebras, giraffes, oh my! I walked across an international border, swam through the Zambezi River, hung over the edge of Victoria Falls, followed by afternoon tea. Africa, thank you, I will always remember you for this. Such a beautiful land—and unfortunately one which is so devastated by poverty, corruption, AIDS, and social injustices. Yet it is now the most Christian continent on earth. It just makes one wonder what God has in store for this place…

The mine rescue in Chile and why it brings out the best in image bearers

People, created in God’s image, accomplish great things when two ingredients are present: (1) A clear mission and (2) A shared sense of urgency.

It’s Sunday evening and like so many throughout the world, I am praying that each miner will be rescued in Chile.  The thought of being trapped so far underground makes me shudder.

A thousand things could go wrong with the upcoming rescue, and God only knows what will happen, but I think they will get them out.

Obviously, I don’t think they will get them out because it is an easy task.  If the miners are rescued via a tunnel two feet wide in diameter, drilled through solid rock, then it will be quite an accomplishment.

But, it won’t surprise me if they are rescued.  Haven’t we observed time and time again, if two things are present, namely, (1) A clear mission and (2) A recognition of the urgency, then by God’s grace, then great things happen.

In this case, both mission and urgency are obvious to anyone who knows the situation:

  1. Mission – Get the miners out.
  2. Urgency – If we don’t, then they will die horrible deaths.

So, the work in Chile goes on twenty fours a day.  The best engineers have been consulted.  No expense is being spared.  Political differences are set aside.  The collective world watches closely to see if the rescue will be successful.

I wonder how God would use our local churches if we kept in mind: (1) The mission is to go into all the world and make disciples and (2) Nothing could be more urgent given that the eternal future of people created in God’s image is at stake.
